Most small business owners around here set up their Google Business Profile once, fill in the basics, and never touch it again. That is understandable, because you are busy running the actual business. But Google tends to favor profiles that look alive and cared for, and so do the folks deciding whether to call you. The good news is that keeping yours fresh takes about ten minutes every week or two, and you do not need to be a tech person to do it.
Why a quiet profile holds you back
When two shops in Cleveland or Athens offer the same thing, Google often leans toward the one that looks current. A profile with recent photos, up-to-date hours, and a few posts signals that the business is open and paying attention. A stale one can make people wonder if you are even still around.
You are not trying to game anything here. You are just giving Google and your customers honest, recent proof that you are working and ready for the next job.
Post a short update now and then
Google lets you share little posts right on your profile, and they show up when someone finds you. These do not need to be fancy. A sentence about a job you just finished, a seasonal reminder, or a note about a new service is plenty.
Aim for one every week or two. If that feels like a lot, keep a note on your phone and jot down something worth sharing whenever it happens. By the time you sit down to post, you already have the words.
Add real photos as you go
Fresh photos do more work than almost anything else on your profile. Snap a few shots of finished projects, your crew, your storefront, or the inside of the shop. Add a handful every month or so.
Keep them real and local. A clear phone photo of actual work you did in town beats a polished stock image every time, because people can tell the difference and they trust what looks genuine.
Keep your hours and details honest
Nothing frustrates a customer faster than driving over on a holiday you forgot to mark closed. Update your hours for holidays and any seasonal changes before they happen, not after someone shows up to a locked door.
While you are in there, glance at your phone number, address, and services. Make sure everything still matches what is true today. Small mistakes here cost you calls and chip away at trust.
Answer questions and reviews promptly
People can post questions right on your profile, and anyone can answer them, which means you want to get there first with the correct information. Check for new questions when you log in and reply in plain language.
The same goes for replying to reviews. A short, friendly thank you to a happy customer, or a calm and fair response to a tough one, shows everyone reading that you care. That kind of attention quietly builds the reputation that brings in the next customer.
